NAP Consistency: Why Your Business Details Must Match Everywhere
NAP stands for name, address, and phone number. Consistency means every listing shows the same three details, written the same way. Small differences can make search engines unsure which version is correct.
Common mismatches
- Street versus St., or Suite versus Ste. versus #
- An old address or phone number left on one directory
- A tracking number on some listings and a main number on others
- A business name with extra keywords added
- Different names for the same practice or firm
How to check your listings
Search your phone number, old phone numbers, and your business name in quotes. List every result, then compare each one to your master record. Look for duplicates as well, since they split your data across two listings.
How to fix them
- Write one master version of your name, address, and phone number.
- Fix your Google Business Profile first.
- Update the biggest directories next.
- Claim or merge duplicates instead of creating new listings.
When you build new listings, start from the master record every time. See our manual citation service if you would rather hand it off.
